Over here, to see most British tv shows, you have to get satellite dish or watch BBC America (which I love…Hex, How Clean is Your House, The Weakest Link, The Office…woot! Lol!) …I always wondered if it was so in Britain. Do you have a special "America channel", or can you just turn on the tv and see one of our shows? Because all of my non-American friends (not just from Britain) always know almost ever American television show, but I hardly ever know any international ones.

Also, my mom and I are big football fans, and its only recently that games have been shown on ESPN, Comcast Sports, etc. Before, you had to order special channels like GolTV, Fox Soccer, etc. Do you guys get American football, baseball and basketball games on regular tv, or do you have to order special channels for that as well? Just wondering…lol! icon biggrin American shows on British tv...?

most of our shows are american
on our normal channels we get simpsons, friends, family guy, ugly betty etc – mostly the really popular shows in your country that they think will work here.
if we have cable we can watch pretty much all of your shows.
we can watch baseball and stuff if we get up at like 4 in the morning and i think you can pay to view it as well.
hope this helps

We get lots of shows on satellite or cable tv, and once they are old they go on to normal tv.
We get American football etc as well on satellite sports channels and a bit on the others.
But satellite tv costs a lot!

I too love British TV and movies. I especially love British humor. I watch every thing that I can. Our local PBS station shows several British comedies on Saturday night! Yay! :)

We just so happen to breathe American shows…

Nah, it saves us from watching the same old repeats (re-runs) over and over again!!! I think that nearly every channel we watch features an American show…

I used to love the American version of Whose line is it anyway until they cancelled it *sobs*

Usually, television standards conversion is why you won’t find many European, African and Asian (barring Japanese) shows on US TV. Those countries mostly use the PAL system, which isn’t compatible with our NTSC used in North and South America. You’ll notice that you can always pick out the British shows by their "fuzzy" appearance–the picture isn’t quite as crisp, and that’s because some visual information is lost in conversion. NTSC ends up gaining some information when it’s converted, so quality could be the issue.

I know, it isn’t an exact answer to the question, but it could explain part of the reason why what you said is true.

I don’t know why we can’t have every single country use the exact same television standard. Maybe that would be too easy ;)

No, we get them on nearly every channel. The sitcoms are quite popular (I don’t like them though, it’s mainly the kids that like them). All of the drama series do well too, like 24 and lost.
We get The Simpsons, South Park, Family Guy, Futurama, all the animated stuff. I like those.
Your sports aren’t very popular though. Hardly anybody watches American Football, Baseball, Basketball or Ice Hockey.

To get the most American shows you really need to have cable or satellite tv but a lot are now on normal terrestrial channels, although generally not the big new flashy shows. Lost for example has been bought by Sky, a satellite channel. Recently Channel Five started its own dedicated American satellite channel, Five US but that’s the only one so far. For american sports you really need satellite channels but ocassionally I’ve seen baseball on at 2am on terrestrial channels.

Your shows are much better than the majority of British fare in my opinion. The new series of Scrubs and My Name is Earl have just started on channel four (a non digital channel) so I’m in heaven on Thursday nights! Oh and House is on Channel four too.

Of course we’re always way behind you in the series unfortunately which is pretty annoying if you try to look it up on the interent and end up spoiling the plot!

Sorry that was a bit of a ramble! :)

We can watch a load of US TV over here, we get Heroes, Lost and loads and loads of comedy and other American programs here. We can watch baseball, American Football, I watch The UFC.
We have news channels, film channels, documentaries, you name it we have it.
There is also a fairly new channel called ‘US Five’.
I think you will be surprised and after watching Sky for a while, will make you feel right at home.

We get them all eventually on one channel or the other. They are shown when they have finished showing in America like Prison Break you had the end before us. I like American TV.

Very few U.S. programmes shown on the regular five channels until they’ve been shown on cable/satellite. Usually the better comedies,’frazier/becker’ type of stuff. Sky is usually the station with a lot of U.S. stuff. Also, the old shows,Perry Mason, fall guy,the district and a lot more are still doing the rounds on cable channels
Not a great call for U.S. sport (wrestling doesn’t count) over here, both gridiron and baseball are a minority sport, although the occassional game does get shown.
