you must have identification presented to them within 6 days of the purchase or the order is candelled. there is certain criteria you need to meet depending on the type of student you are.

For my school at least you need a special password to buy stuff, you have to log in through a site the college set up with apple. They do check online from what I know. If you aren’t really a student, just find a friend who isn’t going to buy what you need this year, and go to the store with them or something.

Recently – while holding a student card – I purchased Office 2004 with the guaranteed upgrade to Office 2008. I did so because the card expired 2007. Did they check in the store? Nope.
When I bought an iMac – at a retailer not associated with Apple but selling their gear – I asked for student price and had to provide ID to get it.
It varies. depends on how diligent they feel at the time is my experience. Same happened when several years back I bought MS Office from a large retailer. I had student ID but they didn’t check.

Yes they do, and there are stipulations as to what college you are going to as to whether or not you get the discount. They are getting better at this and becoming more strict due to lots of non-students trying to get that student discount especially when the free ipod nano w/ purchase promotion is in effect.
