how to get on any tv game show

I was wondering if anyone knew where I could learn about cryptology (things like different types of ciphers e.g. the Vigenere cipher and how to crack them) I’m not really looking for the history about them, just what they are and how to solve them. Also, a friend gave me a puzzle that had to with this. It had a bunch of different symbols although some were the same. Each one stood for a letter. You had to figure out the code. It looked like this {} PPP ::: and {} would mean "T" PPP would mean "H" and ::: would mean "E" there would be several words and every time an E showed up, ::: would be in place of it and so on. What are those puzzles called? Thank you.

Generally, the way to learn how to solve them is to learn how they were created which is kind of like learning the history. I hope the link helps.
